Subhedar Pilajirao Jadhavrao Chatri

Subedar Pilaji Jadhavrao was a prominent Maratha sardar (military commander) during the Maratha Empire. He was known for his bravery and his many victories against the Mughals, Nizams, and Portuguese.

Pilaji Jadhavrao was born in 1690 in the village of Wagholi, near Pune. He was the son of Changaji Jadhav and his wife, Bhavanibai. Pilaji Jadhavrao began his military career at a young age, and he quickly rose through the ranks of the Maratha army.

Pilaji Jadhavrao played a key role in many of the Maratha Empire’s most important military campaigns. He was instrumental in the defeat of Damaji Thorat, a rival Maratha chief. He also led the Maratha army to victory against the Nizams in the Battle of Palakhed and against the Portuguese in the Battle of Vasai.

Pilaji Jadhavrao was granted several villages as inams (tax-free grants) for his services to the Maratha Empire. He died in 1751 at the age of 61.

The Subedar Pilaji Jadhavrao Chhatri is a cenotaph (memorial) that was built in 1752 to commemorate Pilaji Jadhavrao. It is located in the village of Wagholi. The chhatri is a four-pillared structure with a domed roof. It is decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures.

The Jadhavrao family was a prominent Maratha family that played an important role in the history of the Maratha Empire. Pilaji Jadhavrao’s son, Sataji Jadhavrao, also served as a Maratha sardar. The Jadhavrao family continued to be a prominent force in Maratha politics until the early 19th century.
